Happy Summer!
I can't believe summer is almost over and the kids will be coming back to school in a few weeks! The wheat harvest finished early this year thanks to the lack of rainfall and the record setting heat wave we experienced in June. On the plus side, the heat has been good for the garden. I went out early this morning to thin the carrots and picked enough cucumbers to put up a few more jars of dill pickles. I usually eat my fill of cherry tomatoes straight off the vine while I'm puttering out in the garden!
It's fair time again, which I will always associate with the start of Milk Bottle Quilt Co. My friend, Nancy and I were driving back from entering our quilts in the fair when I started sharing my dream of opening an online quilt store. Since we have an awesome quilt store in our town that I didn't want to compete with, I decided to just carry block of the month programs and quilt kits. I knew I would have to continue working full time as the business manager for our local school so I wanted to start small.
I wouldn't have gotten Milk Bottle off the ground without the support of my family and friends. I want to thank Gail Withrow of Quilt Patch Lane, Lise Ott and JoEllen Wollman of Experience Quilts! and Laura Estes of Laura's Sage Country Quilts for their support and patience in answering all my questions about running a quilting business. I am so lucky to have these ladies as mentors and friends.
My daughter, LeeAnne and Nancy have been a part of this venture every step of the way. They have given me great advice and ideas, they encouraged me whenever I got overwhelmed and most importantly, they believed in my dream. My husband has been my biggest supporter. He has been beside me every step of the way.
We currently have two block of the month programs, Bertie's Spring, which will appeal to quilters who like to do applique work and Moccasin from gen X quilters, which features a wide variety of skill building blocks including flying geese, half-square triangles and a Dresden Plate.
Our quilt kits offer a wide range of fabrics and styles. We have a quick and easy kit featuring reproduction prints, a modern geometric kit made with bright, bold solids and a more traditional style quilt kit made from a beautiful selection of black, white, gray and yellow fabrics from Riley Blake. We also offer 20% off your quilt backing when purchased with your kit.
Any fabrics left over after cutting our kits and block of the month programs are immediately put on sale to make room for new lines. Check out our sale tab for some great deals.
I'm looking forward to September, our Indian Summer month, when the nights are cooler and the flowers get their final burst of color before the first fall frost arrives. As the garden winds down and the yard requires less work, I get to spend more time in my quilting room, my favorite room in the house!
